Favorite Holiday Traditions

At the Days Inn Chicago, we know each family has certain holiday rituals, and we'd love to be part-large or small-of yours! In our eyes, no family tradition is too small, wacky, or big.  The traditions you share with your family and friends remind our team of our own.  And in the unlikely event that you don't share any with your family and other loved ones, here are some suggestions.  Some are simpler than others, but all of them have the ability to craft and create memories and connections that will last lifetimes!

If you've got a family that loves to eat and cook-who doesn't, really-then there are a plethora of options available to you.  Just about every holiday tradition involves some sort of culinary aspect.  One of the oldest traditions around is leaving cookies for Santa, but why not make a whole day out of it? Have a cookie party or bake-off where everyone brings a favorite recipe! You can even leave food out for Santa's reindeer-a mixture of colorful sprinkles and oats works well.

Of course, there's more to the holidays than just eating (believe it or not).  One of the best ways to get into the holiday spirit and feel good about your actions is to get involved and give back to the community.  This can be as easy as organizing a caroling group (or maybe not if you keep your vocal exercises to the shower), taking a tour of the holiday lights in your neighborhood, or going to see a holiday-themed play like ‘The Nutcracker' or a holiday-themed concert.  You can also start canned food drives, book drives, or winter clothing drives, or volunteer your time at a soup kitchen or giving tree.

Other favorites include visiting a local hospital, fire station, or police station with treats since they work through the holiday.  Or stop by a senior citizens home.  This one is a favorite of ours-get a big group together and go sledding or tobogganing (weather permitting) on Christmas Day.  It's a great way to get out of the house after being cooped up all day long.  It's never too late to start a holiday tradition!
