Thanksgiving is full of traditions - like lazy afternoon football, a delicious turkey dinner, and a spirited parade to start the day. Across the country, cities put on Thanksgiving Day parades complete with festive costumes, inflatable characters, marching bands and live music.
Nearly four million people watched the Chicago parade on TV last year. If you plan to be here during the holidays, this high-energy event is easily accessible from our hotel via public transit or a short taxi ride. Head to Chicago's vital downtown district for the annual McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade. You can secure your spot on State Street between Congress and Randolph for a front-row seat to all the sights, sounds, and celebrity appearances. This is the perfect way to start your holiday whether you want to meet up with friends, spend time with family, or show the kids a birds-eye view from your shoulders.
Each year, more than 100 different groups march along the parade route. These units include lovable cartoon character blow-ups, troupes on horseback, award winning marching bands, and creatively decorated floats. Get into the holiday spirit with the parade's signature mascot, Teddy Turkey. Get mesmerized by the eye-catching color as a barrage of helium balloons takes to the sky.
Last year, parade goers waved at long-time friends, including Curious George, Mighty Mouse, Mr. Potato Head, Tom & Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Elmo, Rudolph, and Garfield. This year, you can expect to see many of these pop culture classics return along with some new names. In the Grand Finale, look out for Santa Claus as he officially kicks off the Christmas season with a "Ho Ho Ho" that resonates through the streets of Chicago.
